Vortrag: On the Concept of Opacity

This talk considers the nature of indefinite, distorted, or illegible forms of art in light of their cultural, ethical, and epistemological affordances. How do such semi/post-representational artworks address or reflect problems of knowledge and mediation? What are their place and purpose in the firmament of aesthetic history? And what would be some of the key instances of a poetics of opacity? Questioning technological modernity’s hegemonic preference for sharpness and transparency, the lecture makes a case for the social and political value of what could be termed muddy media.
